GUIDELINES FOR TEFL 496 TRANSLATION DISCUSSION SESSIONS
NOTE: It is important that the presentation part should be brief. The whole discussion should not exceed more than 30 minutes per article.
Pre-discussion preparations
1. Read the article(s) that you are assigned and highlight the main arguments /issues raised in the document.(You can prepare a powerpoint presentation or any other visuals to do that.
2. Find some other sources (printed or online documents) that deal with the topic from a different point of view. (You need to share the documents that you have found before the class session. You need to upload these materials to our wiki TEFL 496 and send a mail to your friends about the materials).
Discussion procedures:
1 (You need to prepare an interesting warm-up activity as a starter to the article where the audience is led to think about /brainstorm about the main theme(s). Your warm-up needs to be interactive. You can use online materials or audio-visual tools or printed sources at the warm-up stage.
2. You need to briefly present the main points of the articles that you are assigned, highlighting the problems raised in the article, the importance of the article in relation to the field of English language teaching and the English language teachers, the points you agree with the author, the points that you disagree with the author, a comparison with your own perspective and the author"s.
3. You need to lead the audience to make a critical analysis of the author"s points of view critically from their own perspective by organizing and leading a discussion.You need to make sure that the audience evaluates the validity, and applicability of the main points in the article considering the Turkish context . You also need to provide opportunities for the audience to interact with one another and to exchange their perspectives related to the issues raised in the articles.
You need to monitor the discussion effectively, evaluating the relevance of the responses, making comments on the participants" contributions to the discussion, and encouraging the participants to take part in the discussion if necessary.
You need to wrap up the discussion by summarizing a variety of views raised in the discussion in the end. You also need to express your own views about the topic. You need to be thoroughly familiar with your article. You are in charge of your own article and you are expected to respond to any questions that arise during the discussion.
2. You need to lead students to discuss the new perspective(s) suggested in the additional sources through engaging them in discussion. You should give them opportunites to compare the perspective of your article and that of your own and with the perspective of the new source(s). You need to provide a wrap-up session at the end of each discussion.
3. Find an audio-visual material(e.g., a video) that reflects some aspects of the article. You need to try to illustrate a point/points raised in the original article (the article that you are assigned) and to ask the audience to reflect on the video from their own perspective and the author"s perspective. You can group the audience in different formats (i.e., individual work, pair/group work) at different stages of the discussion.
